Shirkey announces for new 16th Senate Seat

State Representative Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) announced today his intent to run for Senate in the newly apportioned 16th State Senate District. The district will comprise all of Branch, Hillsdale, and Jackson counties.
In making the announcement at the Grand River Marketplace in downtown Jackson, Shirkey said he has enjoyed helping to get Michigan back on track during his time in the House, but was excited about the opportunity to further that work by serving in the Michigan Senate.
“This presents an opportunity to serve and help further strengthen Michigan’s economy at a vital time in its history,” said Shirkey. “A 21st century Michigan has to compete every day to increase job growth and create strong communities for our families.”
The Senate seat is changing as a result of district boundary adjustments caused by the census, as well as the coming retirement at the end of the year of its current Senator, Bruce Caswell. Shirkey spoke to the professionalism, work ethic, and high standards that Senator Caswell has displayed during his time in office.
“Senator Caswell has set a high bar for whoever follows after him,” said Shirkey. “He has been and continues to be an effective legislator in Lansing, one who has been both a leader and mentor to many by reminding people what public service is truly about.”
The current Chair of the Michigan Competitiveness Committee, Shirkey pointed out that with both Branch and Hillsdale Counties bordering other states that the importance of improving Michigan’s jobs competitiveness could not be overstated. Shirkey also currently sits on committees related to energy and healthcare, all of which he said will play an important role in the continued reinvention of Michigan.
“It would be an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Branch, Hillsdale, and Jackson Counties,” said Shirkey. “I’m excited about the race getting started and look forward to talking to all the people of the new 16th District.”
Shirkey was joined by supporters and his wife of 39 years, Sue, along with several of their children and grandchildren.
