When I first learned of Mike Shirkey's plans to seek the seat of the 65th District of the Michigan Legislature, my first thought was, "Why?" Why would a person who has clearly demonstrated such strong administrative skills in creating jobs in private business seek to be among 110 other legislators trying to set policy for the State of Michigan? Why would he subject himself to such a grueling and expensive endeavor as a long primary campaign in hopes of entering into yet another similar campaign for the general election? How could one person expect to make a difference in the overall direction of the State Legislature anyway? As I was mulling over some of these questions out loud with a prominent Brooklyn, Michigan businessman, he answered them in one short sentence, "We need to start with one."
When I asked Mike Shirkey similar questions, he answered, saying "I am not perfect. I have flaws and, like most of us, I have made mistakes." I could relate to what Mike was saying. We are imperfect people in an imperfect world and there are very few of us who can boast of being without flaws. "However," Mike continued, "because I believe the timing is right and that this is a unique opportunity to help make a difference for our State and for our community, I need to put my personal business goals aside for now and run for this office."
As I thought about what Mike said, that he was willing to put aside his personal business goals and to step up the challenge for the benefit of many, I was reminded of a saying I heard years ago about "one beggar trying to show another beggar where to find a loaf of bread." However, Mike is no beggar and he doesn't want the people of this State to be beggars either. Therefore, I believe he will apply his excellent business skills to create a business-friendly climate that will translate into more jobs for the people of the State of Michigan. That way, instead of begging for bread, we will once again be able to "make" our own "bread."
We can all benefit from Mike's talent. If you live in the 65th District, I believe you will help us all with a vote for mike shirkey on August 3. Remember, "We need to start with one." -Kerby Fannin
