"It is my strong opinion, based on research done comparing states that have big tax appetites with states that do not, Michigan needs to send a dramatic message to the world and boldly restructure our tax policies and systems. The Michigan Fair Tax initiative is an excellent reference and starting point for debate and deliberation. Virtually everyone agrees we need more a more stabile and predictable tax revenue vehicle. We DO NOT NEED MORE OR HIGHER TAXES, but we do need to evaluate how our taxes discourage risk taking, investment, family development, and our competitive landscape.
By taxing consumption and not taxing assets we begin down the road of whence we came: a state that understood how to create wealth, promote and celebrate entrepreneurial efforts, and create opportunity and jobs. Solid, value adding jobs capable of supporting and nurturing families. The best health care, education, transportation, and general quality of life begin with establishing and nurturing an environment where families and businesses are attracted to live and grow. In that order.
I look forward to your comments on this topic, please add to the discussion here." - Mike Shirkey

My family and I had the pleasure of meeting Mike yesterday in Brooklyn. After talking to him I decided to contact our local union Michigan Corrections Organization, to endorse him. I believe Mike will make a difference for corrections officers in a time of budget shortfalls, prison closures, and dangerous staffing levels. If anyone is geared to help balance the state budget, and not on the working class' backs, it's Mike! You have my support! -James Duncan
Never has Michigan needed strong leadership than now. With the continued success of his manufacturing company, Mike Shirkey has proven that he has that rare ability to envision what is possible while eliminating processes that do not work. But we really based our decision to endorse Mike on his character. He is a dedicated husband and father, and his faith is an important part of his life. We believe as a state House legislator, Mike will make conscientious decisions based on honest debate, common sense and prayerful consideration. This is what the district needs.
